According to the department, officers responded to a Sedalia hotel to check the well-being of one of the occupants. The occupant reportedly asked hotel staff to call the police because he believed people were trying to enter his room, even though nobody reportedly was.

When officers attempted to make contact, the occupant fired a gun within his room. The subject then fired three more rounds within the room as officers secured the area. The subject, identified as Richard Ballenger, eventually exited his room while still armed, but surrendered to authorities without further incident.

No injuries were reported. The suspect was likely under the influence of a controlled substance.
