Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey is warning Missourians about potential gift card scams
during the 2023 holiday season.
Bailey says these scams will start with a call, text, email, or social media message.
They will say almost anything to get consumers to buy gift cards, like Google Play, Apple, or Amazon cards,
and ask you to hand over the card numbers and PIN codes.
Here are some common tactics scammers use:
-They will say it’s urgent. They will try to get consumers to pay right away.
-They will tell you which card to buy and where to buy it.
-They will ask for the card number and PIN.
Always be sure to slow down and avoid giving away any private information to potential
scammers.
If you have been involved in a scam like this:
-Report the scam to the gift card company.
-Ask for your money back.
Consumers who believe they are the victims of a scam should contact the Attorney General’s
Office Consumer Hotline at 800-392-8222, or visit online at ago.mo.gov.
