Livestock animals, like sheep, need extra protection during harsh winter weather conditions.
Here are some winter safety tips for sheep, courtesy of University of Missouri Extension small-ruminant specialist David Brown.
-Provide some kind of winter for sheep and other animals. Shelters should be built on elevated ground with good drainage and adequate ventilation. Lambs require special attention as temperatures drop.
-Sheep and other livestock kept in barns should have access to fresh and clean water; and producers should check drinking troughs at least twice a day.
-Barns should always be kept dry, and water spillage should be avoided to minimize breeding sites for pathogens.
Brown also advises producers to contact their veterinarian or local extension center to create a treatment plan for any sick ewes or lambs.
