Waverly Fire Protection District Chief Mitch Baldwin is initiating an open fire and burn ban for the Waverly Fire Protection District. Winds are expected to average nearly 30 mph with gusts near 50 mph Thursday Feb 8.

If you already have a fire going please try to extinguish it today or plan to watch it during the periods of the worst gusts. Using a field cultivator or disc to turn the natural cover crops and grass around a burning pile is recommended. Keep tillage equipment handy and up wind of a burn pile to turn the soil if a fire starts spreading across the natural cover. It’s one of the best ways to stop an out of control fire. Trying to move or stirring a burning pile during a high wind event is not recommended. Additional sparks, embers are created and can cause other fires.
