The Marshall Public Schools’ Band Department (grades 6-12) will perform its annual Spring Concert in the Jim Hargrave Gymnasium at Marshall High School at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 17. There is no admission for the event, and it is open to the public.

Groups featured on the concert will include: MHS Concert Band, 8th Grade Concert Band, 7th Grade Concert Band, and 6th Grade Beginning Band.

The band will showcase the new marimba purchased through generous contributions and fundraising efforts of the band and orchestra booster club with two solo selections from percussion students. 8th Grade student Meg Linsenbart and Freshman Whit Thomas will each play prepared solos recently performed at area music festivals.

Under the direction of Sara Summers, assisted by Jordan Summers at MHS and Kevin Lines at BMS, the MHS Concert Band earned the highest rating possible at MSHSAA State Music Festival and the 7th and 8th Grade Bands also earned top ratings at Central Methodist University’s Music Festival this Spring.

Repertoire performed by the bands on the concert will be both varied and challenging. Selections include “Citation”, a concert march written by Missouri native Claude Smith, “Choreography” by Robert Sheldon (a piece commissioned for the 2008 Texas Small School All State Band), “Darklands March” by Randall Standridge, “On The Edge of Tomorrow” by Michael Sweeney, “Moscow, 1941” by Brian Balmages and “The Tempest” by Robert W. Smith.

Student favorite selections will include “Shakespeare Meets Godzilla” and “Krazy Klock” by James Ployhar.

Another fun addition to the evening will be a sixth grade band trombone section feature, “Attack of the Slide Trombones”. This light, spirited tune is sure to delight the entire audience.

This will be the final concert for the following seniors at MHS: Colleen Allen, Carson Grossenburg, Karla Herrera, Amaiya McClinton, Jason McMellen, Ava Shepard, Isaac Stock, Ashley Turcios, and Pyper Wohlgemuth.
