With thunderstorm season approaching, it’s important to know how to stay safe from lightning. The National Program on Lightning Safety has some simple tips to help. First, remember that no place outside is safe when there’s a thunderstorm. If you hear thunder, that means lightning is nearby, so find shelter right away. Head inside a sturdy building with electricity or plumbing, or stay in a car with the windows up.
After the last thunderclap, it’s best to stay indoors for at least 30 minutes. Indoors, avoid using phones or electrical devices, and stay away from plumbing like sinks and baths. If you’re stuck outside and can’t find shelter, try to get off high areas, don’t lie flat on the ground, and stay away from trees and water. These simple tips can help keep you safe during thunderstorms.
