The Marshall Police Department has received numerous reports regarding a telephone scam in which individuals impersonate local law enforcement officials. These scammers contact potential victims, claiming there are outstanding warrants or fines against them and requesting payment. They employ spoofed law enforcement phone numbers, using officers’ names, titles, and addresses to enhance credibility. The scam primarily targets women with successful careers who are active online.

Here are signs of suspicious activity associated with this scam:

1. Calls purportedly from local law enforcement asserting that an individual owes fines for unresolved warrants.
2. Calls purportedly from local law enforcement asserting that the individual is in contempt for failing to appear for jury duty.
3. Calls purportedly from local law enforcement stating that the individual is under a “gag order” and prohibited from discussing the matter with others.
4. Calls purportedly from local law enforcement insisting that the recipient remain on the line until a “bond” is paid.
5. Requests for payment through monetary gift cards (such as Visa or Green Dot), bank deposits, or voucher purchases to settle court fines or avoid incarceration.

If you receive a voicemail purportedly from local law enforcement demanding a callback, do not respond. Instead, verify the call by contacting your local police department’s main phone number or visiting them in person.

It’s crucial to remember that law enforcement will never call you regarding an arrest warrant for missing jury duty, nor will they solicit money to resolve a warrant.

If you suspect you’ve fallen victim to this scam or any other fraudulent activity, reach out to the Marshall Police Department at 660-886-7411 or visit marshallmopolice.com.
