Law enforcement authorities are investigating a mass shooting in Kansas City that resulted in one death and multiple injuries.

At around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, police in the Westport Entertainment District responded to gunfire near the intersection of Westport and Broadway, according to Jackson County Sheriff Daryl Forte.

First responders discovered multiple shooting victims. EMS treated those with non-life-threatening injuries, and six victims were transported to area hospitals by EMS and private vehicles. One man was pronounced dead at the hospital. A preliminary investigation by the KCPD suggested the shooting stemmed from a disturbance that escalated into gunfire.

Police believe there were many witnesses, as a large crowd near the scene dispersed when shots were fired. Detectives and crime scene investigators have processed the scene for evidence and seek to speak with anyone present at the time of the shooting.
