
The San Diego Padres defeated the Kansas City Royals after scoring nine runs in the eighth inning on Friday, May 31.
San Diego struck first in the sixth inning, scoring a pair of runs off of Michael Wacha. Wacha went 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
Kansas City would respond with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth, taking a one-run lead.
Disaster struck in the eighth inning though, when the Padres scored nine runs off of three different Royals relievers. John Schreiber, James McArthur, and Will Klein all struggled in the eighth, giving up nine Padre runs.
The Royals did score five runs in the ninth inning, but it was a little too late as the Royals fell 11-8 in the game.
Nelson Velazquez homered and drove in two runs. Bobby Witt Jr. had three hits and two RBI.
Kansas City falls to 35-24 on the season and have lost five of their last six. They are four games back from the AL Central lead.
