Bobby Witt Jr’s two home runs in Cleveland were overshadowed by his fielding error with two outs that allowed the Guardians to plate the three runs that made the difference in the Royals’ 8-5 loss Tuesday night at Progressive Field.

Witt extended the Royals’ lead over the AL Central leaders with home runs in the third and fourth, before the Guardians offense woke up to claim three runs in the fourth and five in the seventh. After starter Seth Lugo allowed a two-run home run to tie the game, relievers Sam Long and Angel Zerpa loaded the bases with two outs. Witt fielded a ground ball from David Fry and attempted to tag second, but at the last second threw to first, missing Vinnie Pasquantino’s glove. The error cleared the bases and tagged Long with the loss. Hunter Renfroe also homered for the Royals, who now have a 36-26 record and sit five games behind Cleveland.

Game two of the road stand begins at 5:40, with pregame at 5 p.m. on KMMO AM 1300.
