The St Louis Cardinals plated two in the sixth, but left 11 runners on base as they were unable to overtake the Colorado Rockies, losing 3-2 Thursday night at Busch Stadium.
Iván Herrera and Michael Siani provided the RBIs in the sixth for the Cardinals, but despite eight hits, six walks and a throwing error by the Rockies, those two runs were it. The Rockies took advantage of a sub-optimal start by Sonny Gray, who allowed five walks, registered a wild pitch that allowed a run, and had a pitch-timer violation called against him. Gray suffered his fourth loss of the season after allowing three earned runs on just two hits in 4.2 innings of work. Cal Quantrill earned the win, recording no runs off three hits and four walks in five innings, striking out one.
The Cardinals are now fourth in the NL Central, 6.5 games behind the Brewers and just a half-game ahead of Pittsburgh. Game two of the series against the Rockies is tonight, with first pitch at 7:15 p.m.
