Two people were killed and three teenagers were injured after a two-vehicle collision west of Warrensburg on Monday afternoon.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol responded to the accident at the intersection of Route 50 and Business 50 before 1 p.m., where troopers determined that an eastbound pickup driven by an unnamed 16-year-old from Warrensburg went off the side of the road after the driver fell asleep. The vehicle became airborne as it crossed Business 50, striking a car driven driven by 83-year-old Patricia Moffett of Overland Park, Kansas, that was waiting to turn onto the highway. The collision sent Moffett’s car into a road sign,

Troopers say Moffett and a 55-year-old passenger in her car, Derek Moffett of Colorado, died at the scene. Two passengers in the car, aged 19 and 16, were flown to a Kansas City area hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the other vehicle had minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. Troopers say the 16-year-old driver was not wearing his seatbelt.
