The Pittsburgh Pirates only needed three hits, a fielders’ choice and sacrifice fly to get past the St Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night at Busch Stadium, 2-1.

Both teams were scoreless heading into the final inning, as Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas struck out six while giving up one hit and one walk in seven innings of work. Pittsburgh’s Paul Skenes fanned eight while allowing five hits in 6.1 innings. The Pirates loaded the bases in the ninth, using Connor Joe’s grounder to score their first run, while Oneil Cruz added to the total with his sacrifice fly to left field. Nolan Gorman claimed his 15th home run of the year to lead off the ninth, but the Cardinals could not capitalize on a walk and error. Ryan Helsley was tagged with the loss, having walked two and allowed one hit during the ninth.

The Cardinals are now at the bottom of the logjam in the NL Central at 31-34, seven games behind Milwaukee but a half-game behind Pittsburgh for second place. The series against the Pirates continues this evening at Busch Stadium, with first pitch at 6:45.
