Two Marshall Police officers received Lifesaving awards for their efforts on Monday, June 10.

Officer Patschke and Detective Lieutenant Pitts received the award after responding to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 65 in Marshall.

The Marshall Police Department, Saline County Ambulance, and Marshall Fire Department all responded to the accident, which was reported at 12:33 p.m. Monday, June 10.

A driver from the scene reported that they were traveling south on U.S. Highway 65 when a vehicle swerved into their lane. The driver said they swerved to keep from hitting the truck and struck a light pole. The driver had minor injuries to the shoulder and face.

Officers learned the vehicle traveling in the wrong lane of traffic continued north on Highway 65 and drove through the intersection of Arrow and Highway 65. The driver drove off the roadway and down an embankment, coming to a stop near the railroad tracks.

When officers arrived at the vehicle’s location, it was on fire. Officers removed the driver from the burning vehicle. The driver had burns to the lower back and was transported by SCAD to the hospital for treatment. One officer who was on scene was also transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation and later released.

The Marshall Fire Department arrived and extinguished the fire. It is believed the driver was experiencing a medical issue at the time of the accident.
