The Kansas City Royals created fond memories in their last-ever regular season game at Oakland Coliseum on Thursday afternoon, as three solo home runs and three double plays led KC to a 3-2 win over the Athletics.
Bobby Witt Jr was involved in all three double plays, teaming up with Garrett Hampson and Vinnie Pasquantino to help strand eight of Oakland’s base runners. He also provided the game-winning hit in the eighth. The Royals first got on the board in the second with a home run from Freddy Fermin, who repeated the feat in the fourth.
The Athletics would tie the game in the seventh with Zach Gelof’s two-run home run off starter Seth Lugo. That would end Lugo’s line with six hits and three walks but eight strikeouts. James McArthur came in to relieve Lugo and earned the win, despite allowing two hits and two walks in his inning of work. Chris Stratton secured his fourth save of the year.
Barring an unlikely jump in the Athletics’s playoff prospects, the Royals wrap up their final visit to the Oakland Coliseum with a cumulative record of 123-186. The Royals have only paid Angels Stadium in Anaheim more visits. Next year the Athletics relocate to Sacramento, ahead of their proposed move to Las Vegas.
The Royals return to second in the AL Central, now 42-34 and six games behind Cleveland. The road trip continues with a visit to Arlington and the defending champion Texas Rangers. First pitch from Globe Life Field is at 7:05 p.m., with pregame beginning at 6:30 on KMMO.
