The St Louis Cardinals split Wednesday’s doubleheader with the Atlanta Braves, falling 6-2 in the matinee but picking up the nightcap 4-1.
Jerred Kelenic went three-for-five to lead off for the Braves in the first game, singling in a run to cap off a four-run second, then belting a two-run home run in the sixth. The Cardinals picked up runs in the second and fifth innings off sacrifice flies. Reynaldo López claimed his sixth win of the year for Atlanta, going five innings with five strikeouts while allowing the two runs on four hits and four walks. The Cardinals’ Kyle Gibson only lasted four innings, allowing four runs on four hits and five walks while recording four punchouts.
Matthew Liberatore had slightly more time to prepare for his start in Game Two, and it showed as he struck out eight while allowing just two hits and one walk in six innings of work. Liberatore secured his second win of the year after Alec Burleson’s two-out double in the third brought home Michael Siani and Masyn Winn. Jarred Kelenic singled in the Braves’ only run in the top of the eighth, but the Cardinals picked up insurance from RBI singles in the bottom half of the inning from Paul Goldschmidt and Brendan Donovan.
After the two games, the Cardinals are now six games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central, with San Diego moving back into a tie for the second wild card spot. A four-game home stand against Cincinnati begins Thursday at Busch Stadium, with first pitch at 6:45 p.m.
