The Cincinnati Reds scored runs off Cardinals starters Miles Mikolas in each of the first five innings, drubbing St Louis 11-4 on Thursday night at Busch Stadium.
Cincinnati’s first four runs were for extra bases, with Elly De La Cruz hitting a triple in the first and the Reds collecting doubles in the second and third. The Cardinals clawed two runs back on Nolan Arenado’s home run in the third, but the Reds had more doubles and even a home run in the following two innings. Mikolas stuck around for 4.1 innings, tagged with nine earned runs after allowing a dozen hits and one walk, striking out just one. John King allowed an RBI single in the seventh to complete the Reds’ scoring, while the Cardinals picked up two in the eighth off doubles from Brendan Donovan and Dylan Carlson.
Saint Louis are now 41-39, six-and-a-half games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central and one game ahead of the New York Mets for the third and final wild card spot. The Cardinals continue their home series against the Reds on Friday evening, with first pitch at 7:15 p.m.
