Memo Rodriguez perfectly timed a deflection in the box to rocket home the game-winning goal for Sporting Kansas City in a 3-2 victory over FC Dallas at Children’s Mercy Park on Sunday night.
Sporting jumped to a 2-0 lead early off the foot of Willy Agada in the 11th and 23rd minutes, but Dallas were gifted a goal back when a poor pass in midfield ultimately bounced off the heel of Sporting goalkeeper Tim Melia into his own net. Dallas equalized in the 65th minute with a goal from Petar Musa. The two teams will face each other again Wednesday in Kansas City, in the quarterfinals of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Also last night, St Louis City slumped to a 4-1 loss at the Colorado Rapids. Kévin Cabral and Cole Bassett set each other up for goals in the first half for the Rapids, while Jonathan Lewis tallied a goal and assist in the second half. City’s only goal came in the 12th minute from John Klein III.
Saint Louis City remain ahead of Sporting in the Western Conference standings, with City in 12th on 22 points and Sporting 13th with 20 points.
