
Two goals early in the second half led Sporting Kansas City to a 2-1 win Saturday night over the last-place San Jose Earthquakes in San Jose.
Erik Thommy laced the first goal of the match in the 48th minute, followed by Alan Pulido’s score in the 57th. Johnny Russell came off the bench at halftime and provided an immediate impact by setting up Thommy’s score. Nemanja Radola recorded assists on both goals. SKC gave one back in the 83rd minute by way of an own goal by Khiry Shelton.
Sporting Kansas City overtook St Louis City SC in the Western Conference standings after St Louis fell to the Vancouver Whitecaps 4-1 at CITYPark. Nökkvi Thórisson recorded City’s only goal in the 27th minute, while Vancouver’s Brian White scored both Whitecap goals in the first half. White also assisted on one of Vancouver’s two goals in the second.
SKC are now 12th in the Western Conference on 23 points, currently enjoying a three-game winning streak, while St Louis sit right behind on 22 points. Minnesota is currently in the ninth and final playoff spot with 30 points. Both squads are on the west coast Wednesday night, with St Louis visiting Seattle and Kansas City north of the border to face Vancouver.
