The Kansas City Royals selected two-way player Jac Caglianone with the sixth overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft on Sunday night in Ft Worth, Texas.
The University of Florida product had the second-most home runs in NCAA Division One last season with 35, including a record nine consecutive games, while also recording more walks than strikeouts in his plate appearances. Caglianone was originally signed to play for Florida as a left-handed pitcher, but Tommy John surgery his freshman year resulted in him becoming a designated hitter. His pitching skills have also impressed some scouts, posting a career record of 12-6 with a 4.55 ERA, striking out 170 batters in two seasons.
The Royals also selected left-handed pitcher David Shields of Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania with the 41st overall pick.
The St Louis Cardinals used their seventh overall pick to draft West Virginia shortstop JJ Wetherholt. The winner of the 2023 NCAA Division One batting title battled through injuries last season to record eight home runs, eight doubles, 30 RBIs, and a .331 batting average in 36 games. The Cardinals gave up their second-round pick as a result of their acquiring Sonny Gray in the off-season from Minnesota.
The Cleveland Guardians used the first overall pick to select Oregon State second baseman Travis Bazzana, becoming the first top overall pick from Australia.
Rounds three through ten take place Monday afternoon, with the Royals scheduled to select second in each round and the Cardinals sixth. Rounds 11-20 will be Tuesday afternoon.
