Pitching was the focus for the Kansas City Royals’ scouts as all but one pick at Day Two of the 2024 MLB Draft in Ft Worth featured players on the mound.

Two of the Royals’ selections were from the National Champion Tennessee Volunteers, as right-hander Drew Beam went to the Royals in the third round and AJ Causey was selected in the fifth. Beam was the SEC’s freshman of the year in 2022 and limited North Carolina to one run in five innings at the College World Series last month. Causey claimed 13 wins for the Vols this past season, striking out 125 batters in 91.1 innings. The Royals also picked up a righty from the runners-up Texas A&M, welcoming Tanner Jones into the fold with their sixth-round pick. Jones and Causey were previously teammates at Jacksonville State before both transferred to their respective SEC rivals.

Pitchers also selected by the Royals on Monday were right-handers LP Langevin of Louisiana-Lafayette in the fourth round, Dennis Colleran Junior of Northeastern in the seventh, Nick Conte of Duke in the eighth, and lefty Nate Ackenhausen of LSU in the tenth. Canyon Brown was the only position player selected by the Royals yesterday, a catcher from North Carolina A&T selected in the ninth round.

The Cardinals kept their eyes primarily on the Big 12, as five of their eight selections Monday were from the league. Right-handed pitcher Brian Holiday of Oklahoma State was the Redbirds’ selection in the third round, followed by catcher Ryan Campos of Arizona State in the fourth. The Cardinals split their remaining picks between pitchers and position players, with lefty Braden Davis of Oklahoma picked up in the fifth round and teammate Bryce Madron the tenth-round pick, an outfielder. Also selected by the Redbirds were Cincinnati catcher Josh Kross in the sixth round, Vanderbilt right-handed pitcher Jack Findlay in the seventh, left-handed pitcher Andrew Dutkanych IV of Notre Dame in the eighth, and Texas Tech third-baseman Cade McGee in the ninth.

A pair of shortstops from Missouri high schools heard their names called Monday. Tytus Cissell of Francis Howell was the fourth-round pick for the Arizona Diamondbacks, while the New York Mets selected Trey Snyder of Liberty North. Maryville University’s left-handed pitcher Jacob Kroefer was the tenth-round selection of the Atlanta Braves.

Rounds 11 through 20 of the 2024 MLB Draft take place Tuesday afternoon.
