Running back Cody Schrader has a fall back plan if training camp with the San Francisco 49ers doesn’t work out this month: his hometown Battlehawks.
The Saint Louis native and Mizzou product was selected by the United Football League team Wednesday morning in the spring league’s college draft. Schrader went undrafted in April’s NFL Draft, making him eligible to take part in the UFL’s version. It may prove to be a familiar path for Schrader, who received no Division I offers during his years at Lutheran North High School, and walked onto Mizzou’s team after scoring 39 touchdowns at Division II’s Truman State University. Last season Schrader led the SEC in rushing with 125 yard per game, and set the Mizzou single-season record with 1,627 yards, en route to winning the Burlsworth Trophy as the nation’s top walk-on.
The Battlehawks also selected San Jose State quarterback Chevan Cordeiro, Virginia Tech defensive back Pheldarius Payne, Vanderbilt tackle Bradley Ashmore, UCLA linebacker Carl Jones Junior, Oklahoma defensive tackle Isaiah Coe, wide receivers Jelani Baker of Limestone and Jadon Janke of South Dakota State, and cornerbacks Myles Sims of Georgia Tech and Myles Jones of Duke.
