Carol was born on April 10, 1949 to Earl and Mildred (Guthrie) Closterman in Carrollton, MO. She lived most of her life in Kansas City, but in retirement moved home to Waverly, Missouri to be close to her family.
Carol graduated from Grand Pass High School in 1967 and received her Registered Nurse Degree from St. Luke’s University School of Nursing in 1970. Carol had a varied and demanding career in nursing, starting as a critical care nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital and Lexington Memorial Hospital. At St. Luke’s, she worked in both the NICU and the adult critical care unit. Carol also worked in the high-risk emergency medical transport field as a flight nurse for Life Flight for several years. She then worked in the NICU at Children’s Mercy Hospital before working in the adult ICU at St Luke’s North Hospital. Carol spent her last 20 years in nursing as the Union Nurse at the Ford Motor Company plant in Claycomo.
Many of Carol’s friends from around the country knew her through her main passion – her dogs. Although she may have bonded with people over canine activities, it was Carol’s kindness, laughter and willingness to help that drew everyone to her. If you were her family or friend, there wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for you.
Carol is survived by her mother, Mildred Closterman and sisters Connie (Robin) Kalthoff and Suzanne (David) Smith. She is also survived by nephews Chris (Amy) Kalthoff, Andrew (Alicia) Smith, and Alex Smith and her sweet great-nephew Grady Smith. She was preceded in death by her father Earl Closterman, sister Deanna Lee Closterman and brother Craig Closterman.
