Seth Lugo pitched the Kansas City Royals’ first complete game of the season, allowing the Royals to achieve a 4-1 comeback victory Sunday afternoon and sweep the Chicago White Sox.
After two nights of the Royals quickly claiming a lead, the game became a pitchers duel as Lugo and White Sox starter Drew Thorpe kept the game scoreless after five innings. Tommy Pham’s single to center field brought in Nicky Lopez to give the White Sox their only lead of the weekend. A sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the seventh from Kyle Isbel tied the game, allowing Maikel Garcia to score.
The Royals took control of the game in the eighth, tagging reliever John Brebbia with RBI singles from Hunter Renfroe, Maikel Garcia, and Dairon Blanco. Lugo retired all three batters in the ninth to complete the game with one run, three hits and six strikeouts. His complete game is the first with no more than one run scored since Brad Keller shut out the Pirates in the 2020 season. Lugo becomes the 99th pitcher in Royals history to pitch a complete game.
Coupled with Cleveland’s loss to San Diego and Minnesota being swept by Milwaukee, the Royals are now tied for second in the AL Central, five games behind the Guardians. They’re also tied with the Twins for the second wild card spot, after Boston was swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Royals begin a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday evening at Kauffman Stadium, with first pitch at 7:10. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 on KMMO FM 102.9.
