A one-out single from Nick Gonzales allowed the Pittsburgh Pirates to bring down the St Louis Cardinals 2-1 on Monday night at PNC Park, tightening the Wild Card picture in the NL.

Pittsburgh scored first in the bottom of the third, when Onell Cruz’s single brought home Andrew McCutchen. The Cardinals responded when Nolan Gorman hit a home run in the fifth—his 19th of the year—for the Redbirds’ only score.

Andre Pallante worked six innings in the no-decision, allowing one run on three hits, two walks and three strikeouts. John King took the loss after allowing Gonzales’ RBI, one of three hits he allowed during the eighth inning while striking out one. King also recorded a wild pitch.

The Cardinals are now 52-48, still five games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central and a half-game ahead of the Mets for the second wild card spot. Pittsburgh and San Diego are now tied at a half-game behind the Mets, while Arizona sits one game behind, The Cardinals continue their series at Pittsburgh on Tuesday evening, with first pitch at 5:40.
