The Kansas City Royals overwhelmed the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-4 last night at Kauffman Stadium, as Bobby Witt Jr nearly pulled off a feat not done in a Royals uniform since 1990.
Witt’s double to lead off the third sparked a three-run inning to help the Royals retake the lead, as Vinnie Pasquantino brought him home with an RBI single and Salvador Perez followed up with a two-run home run. Witt already had a triple in the first when he extended the Royals’ lead in the fourth with a three-run blast to center field, leaving him a single shy of hitting the cycle. However, Witt’s next at bat saw him plunked in the upper arm by reliever Humberto Castellanos, raising tempers in the Royals dugout and among many of the 16,275 fans in attendance. Witt popped out in the eighth, leaving the Royals’ most recent completed cycle that of George Brett’s at Toronto on July 25, 1990.
Cole Ragans secured another quality start with six innings of work in the win, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks while striking out five.
Both the Royals and Minnesota won, leaving the two level in the AL Wild Card standings, while closing in on Cleveland with both teams four games back in the Central. The Royals and Diamondbacks face off again Tuesday evening with pregame coverage on KMMO FM 102.9 beginning at 6:30 p.m. First pitch will be at 7:10.
