A pitching duel featuring Pittsburgh phenom Paul Skenes saw the Saint Louis Cardinals’ starter make history, en route to a 2-1 Redbird winner Tuesday night at PNC Park.
Lance Lynn became the 89th pitcher in MLB history to record 2,000 strikeouts, needing two punchouts to reach the milestone. Those would be his only two in five innings of work, as Lynn allowed four hits and three walks. The Cardinals’ Nolan Gorman had Lynn in position to get the win after hitting a solo home run in the top of the fifth, but JoJo Romero allowed an RBI single in the eighth to Nick Gonzales to tie the game. Skenes pitched into the ninth, but gave up a single with one out to Alec Burleson that proved to be the game-winner for the Cardinals. Ryan Helsley recorded his 33rd save of the season by striking out the side in the bottom of the ninth.
The Cardinals kept pace with Milwaukee in the NL Central, remaining five games back, as well as a half-game advantage on the New York Mets for the second wild card spot. The Padres, Diamondbacks, and Pirates are still within two games of the Cardinals. It’s a day game for the Cardinals as they wrap up the trip to Pittsburgh on Wednesday afternoon, with first pitch at 11:35.
