City of Marshall Mayor Vince Lutterbie and Marshall Schools Superintendent Caleb Petet hosted a brief ceremony Friday morning, marking the transfer of most of the former Marshall Habilitation Center campus to the school district.
The transfer itself occurred earlier this month, but Mayor Lutterbie says it was important to have a public event marking what he calls an important milestone for both polities.
Superintendent Petet tells KMMO News that the new acreage will provide additional opportunities for the district’s growth.
Earlier transfers to the district have allowed construction of Spainhower Primary and the intermediate school, which is on schedule to open in August 2025. However, one last structure from the former Habilitation Center remains standing, the smokestack and boiler. Mayor Lutterbie says asbestos abatement and demolition will happen soon.
As part of the deed transfer, the City of Marshall will assume ownership of the Eastwood Elementary School campus next spring, after the upcoming school year concludes.
