Pinch hitter Patrick Wisdom slammed the door shut on the Kansas City Royals, as his grand slam in the seventh inning put the Chicago Cubs ahead for good in their 9-4 win Saturday night at Kauffman Stadium.
The Cubs took the lead with one out in the first by way of a two-run home run by Seiya Suzuki. A Hunter Renfroe home run in the second would halve the lead, only for the Cubs to claim the run back in the next inning. The Royals would take the lead in the sixth by scoring three runs, including two off a Renfroe single. That gave starter Seth Lugo a chance to turn his sluggish outing into a win, but he was pulled after loading the bases in the seventh and getting only one out. Reliever Sam Long delivered the 2-1 pitch to Wisdom that sealed the Royals’ fate, and the Cubs would add two more in the ninth.
Lugo was assessed his fifth loss of the season, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two. Cubs starter Shota Imanaga ended up with a no-decision, allowing three hits on six hits while fanning three in 5.2 innings of work. Despite blowing a save opportunity, Julian Mayweather picked up his first win of the year after claiming two outs in the seventh.
Kansas City remains one game ahead of Boston for the third wild card spot with a record of 57-48, 5.5 games behind Cleveland in the AL Central. The Royals will look to close out the homestand with a series win Sunday afternoon. Pregame is at 12:30 p.m., with first pitch at 1:10 p.m., on KMMO AM 1300.
