For the second straight game, the Kansas City Royals needed eighth-inning heroics to stage a comeback win, defeating the Chicago White Sox 4-3 on Tuesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
The Royals fell behind in the first after a wild pitch allowed Nicky Lopez to score. Michael Massey’s home run in the third tied the game back up, but a solo shot from Andrew Vaughn in the fourth put the White Sox back in the lead. Bobby Witt Jr tied the game back up with a shallow hit into center field that scored Maikel Garcia. Vinnie Pasquantino brought home Witt and Dairon Blanco, aided in part by Pasquantino attempting to stretch his single into a double. The White Sox threw out Pasquantino at second, allowing Witt to plate what was ultimately the go-ahead run, as Vaughn added an RBI in the bottom half of the eighth.
Both starting pitchers secured quality starts, going seven innings. The Royals’ Michael Wacha claimed the win, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five. Jonathan Cannon allowed one run on one hit and three walks while striking out two. Fraser Ellard was tagged with the loss for the White Sox, while Sam Long earned his first save of the season for KC.
The Royals are ten games over .500 (59-49), tied with Minnesota for the second wild card spot and second in the AL Central, 6.5 games behind Cleveland. Boston sit two games behind in the wild card standings.
Kansas City will have their last matchup of the season with the White Sox on Wednesday afternoon, with pregame at 12:30 p.m. and first pitch at 1:10 on KMMO AM 1300.
