Both the Kansas City Royals and St Louis Cardinals were busy Tuesday ahead of Major League Baseball’s trade deadline.
The Royals acquired shortstop Paul DeJong from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league pitcher Jarold Rosado. DeJong had recorded an RBI for the White Sox against the Royals in Monday night’s game, his 41st of the year, to go with his 18 home runs and 77 hits in 102 appearances for Chicago. DeJong spent six and a half seasons with St Louis before being traded to Toronto and later San Francisco last year.
The Royals also picked up right-handed reliever Lucas Erceg from the Athletics, sending pitchers Mason Barnett and Will Klein, along with outfielder Jared Dickey. Erceg recorded three saves for Oakland with a 2-3 record, 3.68 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. Erceg is under contract until 2029, providing a long-term option in the bullpen for the Royals.
The Cardinals shipped outfielder Dylan Carlson to Tampa Bay in exchange for Shawn Armstrong. Armstrong has appeared in 38 games and started seven for the Rays this season, going 2-2 with an ERA of 5.40 and 50 strike outs. It’s a far cry from the 1.38 ERA he had last season in 39 appearances.
