It hasn’t been the best start to the second half of the season for St Louis Cardinals reliever Ryan Helsley.
Major League Baseball’s saves leader at the All-Star Break has only recorded one save since then, and only made his fifth appearance since the break Thursday night at Wrigley Field. The Chicago Cubs were primed to take advantage, as Helsley gave up three extra-base hits including a double to Mike Tauchman, resulting in a 5-4 loss for the Cardinals. Tauchman’s pinch-hit double came with two outs, after Dansby Swanson brought in the tying run with a double of his own. Cody Bellinger started the rally with one out when he sent a solo shot over the ivy.
The Cardinals had led early, after Paul Goldschmidt hit a home run in the first. The Cubs tied the game in the second and took a 2-1 lead in the sixth. The Redbirds got to starting pitcher Shota Imanaga in the seventh, with Masyn Winn giving the Cardinals the lead back on a two-run home run and Nolan Arenado singling in another run. Imanaga ended up allowing ten hits in his 6.2 innings of work, allowing all four Cardinal runs while striking out seven. Cubs reliever Nate Pearson had two scoreless innings to claim his first win of the season. Helsley’s blown save was his fourth of the season, spoiling Sonny Gray’s quality start of seven innings that saw Gray strike out nine.
The Cardinals are now 56-53 but maintain second in the NL Central, 5.5 games behind Milwaukee as well as two games behind Arizona in the wild card race. Game two of the four-game trip to Wrigley Field is Friday afternoon at 1:20.
