The St Louis Cardinals left it late to dig out of an early hole against the Chicago Cubs, but were able to do so by way of a Tommy Pham triple.

Pham’s leadoff triple turned into the game-winning run when Lars Nootbaar delivered a sacrifice fly, allowing the Cardinals to post a 5-4 win Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field. The triple capped off a two-for-four day for Pham, as he was one of three Cardinals with multiple hits on the afternoon. It was one of Brendan Donovan’s three hits that set up Alec Burleson’s trot across the plate in the eighth inning, following a throwing error from Cubs third baseman Isaac Paredes. Donovan and Willson Contreras both scored on a single from Nolan Arenado to tie the game up. The Cubs had entered that eighth inning with a 4-1 lead that they had maintained since the second inning.

The Cardinals’ comeback spoiled the quality start that Jameson Taillon recorded. He registered one earned run and six hits with four strikeouts. Kyle Gibson was charged with all four runs in the no decision, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out seven. JoJo Romero secured his fifth win of the season with one punchout in his inning of work, while Ryan Helsley picked up his 34th save of the year.

St Louis now sit at 57-54, 5.5 games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central and two games behind Arizona in the wild card chase. The Cardinals’ last contest against the Cubs in the regular season is set for Sunday evening at 6:10.
