St Louis City SC only converted one shot from the spot after their match against FC Juarez ended in a 1-1 draw Sunday night at CITYPark, finishing as runners-up in their pool.
Nökkvi Thórisson made the only successful penalty kick attempt in the shootout, while the Mexican side went four-for-four to claim the victory. The game had been scoreless at the half and until Simon Becher turned Eduard Löwen’s pass into a successful shot from the center of the box in the 58th minute. Juarez would equalize four minutes later by way of a goal from Dieter Villalpando.
Despite the loss, St Louis City have earned a home game for the Round of 32 on Friday. City will host the Portland Timbers, who defeated Colorado and Léon to win their group.
Meanwhile, Sporting Kansas City will wrap up pool play Monday at 8 p.m. at Children’s Mercy Park against Toluca. The winner will host their Round of 32 contest, while the loser will travel to Columbus to face the Crew on Friday.
