The American Red Cross says it’s experiencing a nationwide blood shortage and is making an urgent plea for blood donations.

JoAnn Woody, executive director of the Greater Kansas City and Northwest Missouri chapter, says recent heatwaves are one of the reasons causing a decrease in donations.

Nationwide, the Red Cross’ blood supply has fallen by more than 25 percent since July 1st. Woody says blood donors of all types, particularly Type O, are urged to give as soon as possible.

The American Red Cross has an app available for blood donors to use and find their nearest donation site, as well as keep track of previous donations. More information about donating blood, as well as qualifications for blood donors, are available on the Red Cross’ website.
