The St Louis Cardinals put a different offensive strategy to use Wednesday night against the Tampa Bay Rays and it paid off, as the Redbirds prevailed 5-2 at Busch Stadium.

After Tuesday’s game saw the Cardinals rely entirely on home runs for their scores, the Cardinals kept things in the park, as Willson Contreras tallied the first run in the opening frame with a line-drive single. The Rays responded with a fielder’s choice in the third, only for Nolan Arenado to double two runs across in the home half of the inning. Alec Burleson also collected a pair of RBIs with his double in the fourth, while the Rays would only get one more run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Erick Fedde picked up the win in his first game at Busch Stadium as a Cardinal. Fedde went five innings and struck out six while allowing one run on four hits and a pair of walks. Ryan Helsley collected his 36th save of the season.

St Louis improve to 59-56 on the season, six games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central and two games behind Atlanta in the wild card race. The Cardinals look to sweep Tampa Bay on Thursday evening, with first pitch at 5:15.
