
The St. Louis Cardinals rallied in the 8th and 9th, defeating the Kansas City Royals 8-5 on Friday, August 9.
St. Louis took an early lead with home runs off the bat of Willson Contreras and Alec Burleson.
The Royals would tie the game in the 3rd, getting on the board thanks to an RBI triple from Kyle Isbel and RBI hits from Michael Massey and Salvador Perez. Kansas City would take the lead in the following inning with an RBI double from Maikel Garcia and a sacrifice fly.
The Cardinals pulled within one thanks to an RBI groundout from Tommy Pham. Down 5-4 in the 8th inning, Victor Scott II was the hero for the Redbirds, driving in two runs with a double, putting the Cardinals on top 6-5. St. Louis added two more runs in the 9th thanks to Contreras’s second homer of the game.
Miles Mikolas went four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits for St. Louis. Matthew Liberatore earned the win, pitching three scoreless innings of relief. Ryan Helsley earned his 37th save of the season.
Royals starter Michael Lorenzen allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings, and did not factor into the decision. Will Smith was tagged with the loss, allowing two runs while recording just one out.
