The Kansas City Chiefs experienced a pair of setbacks in Saturday’s 26-13 preseason loss at Jacksonville.
Hollywood Brown caught Patrick Mahomes’ first pass from scrimmage, only to suffer a dislocated sholder on the tackle. Brown left the game and went to a local hospital for treatment before being cleared to return to Kansas City. After the game, head coach Andy Reid said that Brown will miss some time, comparing the injury to one that Tyreek Hill suffered in the preseason five years ago, also at Jacksonville.
The Chiefs were also taken aback by the new kickoff rules imported from the XFL, resulting in their gifting the Jaguars a safety after Jacksonville had taken the lead late in the second quarter. The kickoff bounced in the end zone but then across the goal line into the field of play, where Mecole Hardman grabbed the ball and pulled it back into the end zone. The previous rules would have deemed the kickoff an automatic touchback. Special teams had also allowed a 73-yard return on their first kickoff.
The Chiefs’ lone touchdown came in the second quarter on a fourth-and-goal rush by rookie Carson Steele, who led the team with 29 yards on four carries.
The remaining two preseason games for the Chiefs are at Arrowhead Stadium, including Saturday afternoon’s contest against the Detroit Lions.
