St Louis City SC grabbed the lead in the second half on a penalty kick, but three late goals turned a potential upset of the Liga MX champions Club América into a 4-2 drubbing of City on Tuesday night in the Leagues Cup round of 16 in Carson, California.
Bryan Rodríguez netted the first goal in the 18th minute for América, the only goal in the first half. City started the second half strong, with Indiana Vassilev knotting the game up in the 49th minute and Eduard Löwen giving St Louis the lead with a penalty kick six minutes later. The Mexican champions would not go away, as Diego Valdés equalized in the 79th minute, then Rodríguez launched the go-ahead goal from the spot in the 86th minute. A lengthy allotment of stoppage time only served to pad América’s lead when Rodrigo Aguirre closed out the game with a goal after City’s corner kick came up short.
With their Leagues Cup campaign concluded, City return to MLS play on August 24th, hosting the Portland Timbers.
