Sporting Kansas City is turning to Spain for help in the defensive line, signing center back Joaquin Fernández to a contract through the 2025 MLS season.

The 28-year-old Fernández recently played for Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super Lig after spending five seasons at Real Valladolid in Spain’s La Liga. He’s appeared in 297 games and scored six goals. Fernández will wear the number 12 for Sporting KC and occupy an international spot on the roster.

Sporting KC next play August 24th against Orlando City at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas.
