The St Louis Cardinals struggled on the base path, hitting into three double-plays in a 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday afternoon, dropping a second straight series.
The Cardinals could only muster six hits and one walk in the game, as their only run came off the bat of a pinch-hitting Lars Nootbaar in the eighth. The Dodgers’ runs came off a solo home run by Shohei Ohtani in the fifth, followed by a Miguel Rojas single bringing in Mookie Betts. The Cardinals had a chance to tie or walk it off after a fielding error in the ninth, but Nolan Arenado grounded into a double play to give Michael Kopech his 11th save of the season.
Clayton Kershaw picked up the win with six innings of scoreless pitching, allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out two. Sonny gray ended up with the loss, charged with both runs on seven hits and three walks while fanning six.
The Cardinals are 61-63 and losing more ground in the wild card race, sitting five games behind Atlanta with the Mets and Giants in front of them. Milwaukee remains comfortably ahead in the NL Central with an 11-game lead on the rest of the division. Those Brewers will bring their five-game winning streak to Busch Stadium on Tuesday, with first pitch at 6:45.
