For the second week in a row, the Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t adapt to a special teams export from the XFL, dropping their second preseason game of the year.

Jake Bates connected on four field goals, including the game winner from 43 yards as time expired, leading Detroit to a 24-23 win Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium. Bates, who made headlines for making a 64-yard field goal for the XFL’s Michigan Panthers against the St Louis Battlehawks despite never attempting a field goal in college or high school, also scored Saturday on field goals of 55, 23, and 32 yards. The Chiefs kept the Lions off the board in the first quarter with a pair of Harrison Butker field goals and a 22-yard pass from Carson Wentz to Xavier Worthy.

The Chiefs led at the half 16-12 after the Lions added a touchdown and Bates’ first two field goals, while Butker netted his third field goal of the game. Bates added his third score in the third quarter, while the Chiefs and Lions exchanged touchdowns in the fourth.

The Lions controlled the clock with 32 minutes of possession, but turned over the ball three times. However, the Chiefs could not capitalize on late turnovers, and had trouble getting the ball back into Lions territory. A 22-yard punt return by Isaiah Williams set up the Lions’ game winning field goal.

Patrick Mahomes went 8-for-14 in two first-quarter drives, throwing for 93 yards.  That included a behind-the-back pass on third down to Travis Kelce.

The Chiefs conclude preseason play Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium against the Chicago Bears. Pregame begins at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
