Cole Ragans posted nine strikeouts in five innings of work, but was unable to record an out in the sixth as the Los Angeles Angels rallied to deal the Kansas City Royals a 9-5 loss Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium.

Ragans gave up a home run to Zach Netto to lead off the sixth, then walked Nolan Schaunel and hit Kevin Pillar with his next pitch, bringing his night to a close. Reliever James McArthur gave up RBI singles to Logan O’Hoppe and Anthony Rendon before recording an out, with both runs charged to Ragans. The bullpen gave up a pair of runs in the seventh and two more in the ninth. Ragans took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits and three walks in just over five innings.

Kansas City’s offense held their own, matching the Angels’ two runs in the fourth. Bobby Witt Jr went three-for-five, including an RBI double in the seventh. Vinnie Pasquantino’s two hits both brought in runs. However, the Royals were done in by defensive miscues, with errors charged to Garrett Hampson and Angel Zerpa, and two Angels batters hit by pitches.

All five Kansas City runs and 12 hits were charged to Angels starter Tyler Anderson, who was able to claim his tenth win of the year. The Angels bullpen combined for three innings of scoreless work with three punchouts.

The Royals are now 70-56, still tied with Minnesota for second in the AL Central and the second wild card spot after the Twins fell to San Diego. Boston sit 3.5 games behind. The Royals will conclude their series with the Angels on Wednesday evening, with pregame at 6:30 on KMMO-FM 102.9 and first pitch at 7:10.
