24-0822-ward-burton-sb756-petition-delivery

Close to 500 Saline County voters have submitted their own petition calling for residents age 62 and older to receive property tax credits on their homes.

Clerk Brittni Burton confirms to KMMO News that her office received a petition calling for a measure on the Nov. 5 general election ballot asking voters to grant senior citizens the opportunity to claim credits equivalent to an increase in their property tax liability.  Burton says of the 59 pages received, 511 signatures were submitted and checked by her office, with 490 verified as valid. That’s 10 more than the threshold set by Senate Bill 190, the measure passed last year establishing the senior tax credit and the means for counties to enact it.

Burton adds that state statute calls for the petition to be delivered to the county commission, who will then hold the referendum. The commission had already passed an order August 14th putting the measure on November’s ballot, using language that will become law Wednesday following the passage of Senate Bill 756.
