The St Louis Cardinals failed to reach third base after a successful pickoff in the third, as the Minnesota Twins plucked the Cardinals 6-0 on Saturday night at Target Field.
The Cardinals had runners on second and third in the second with one out before Twins starter Pablo López struck out Paul Goldschmidt and Pedro Pagés. The third inning saw Victor Scott II doubling and advancing to third, but getting picked off right before Alec Burleson struck out to end the Cardinals threat. The Twins would then open it up in the bottom half of the frame, with Trevor Larnach blasting a three-run shot to right field and the Twins also scoring on a fielder’s choice. Larnach also had a home run in the fifth, as did Matt Wallner in the eighth.
López only allowed four hits in his seven innings of work, recording one walk and nine strikeouts. Sonny Gray took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks while recording seven punchouts.
While the Twins returned to a tie with the Royals for second in the AL Central, the Cardinals (64-65) slip to third in the NL Central, 11 games behind Milwaukee and six games behind Atlanta for the third wild card spot. The Cardinals look to claim the series in Minnesota on Sunday afternoon, with first pitch at 1:10 p.m.
