The Kansas City Current received a rude awakening upon their return to NWSL regular season play Sunday afternoon, as the Washington Spirit rocked them with a 4-1 loss at Audi Field in the nation’s capital.

The Spirit struck early with two goals in the first 15 minutes, capitalizing on miscues in the midfield. The Current again struggled to contain the Spirit’s offense in the second half, with Trinity Rodman scoring in the 50th minute and Leicy Santos adding a goal in the 72nd. The Current’s only goal came from Temwa Chawinga in the 63rd minute, adding to the Malawian forward’s league-leading total of 13 goals.

While seven weeks between league games, as well as six victories in midseason tournaments, the Current are now on a two-game losing streak in NWSL action, falling to third in the league standings with 35 points. The Current visit North Carolina next Sunday afternoon.
