A two-out single from Lars Nootbaar turned the St Louis Cardinals’ fortunes around Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis, leading the Redbirds to a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins.
A tight game for the series win started with a Twins home run in the first by Willi Castro. The Cardinals would eventually respond in the fifth with a solo home run from Victor Scott II. The game remained tied until the eighth, when Royce Lewis hit a double to center field that scored Castro. The Cardinals set up Nootbaar’s decisive hit with a single from Nolan Arenado and Brendan Donovan reaching base on an error. Ryan Helsley allowed one hit while claiming his 40th save of the year.
Jhoan Duran had no earned runs in the loss and blown save, giving up three hits while striking out two. Cardinals starter Erich Fedde had a no decision with just two hits and three walks to go with seven strikeouts across six innings of work. Shawn Armstrong was credited with the win, his third of the year.
The win puts the Cardinals back at .500, but still 10.5 games behind Milwaukee in the NL Central and five games behind Atlanta in the wild card race. The Cardinals have a chance to close the gap when they host San Diego on Monday evening, with first pitch from Busch Stadium at 6:45 p.m.
