royals-rainout

The Kansas City Royals poured it on the Cleveland Guardians after a two-hour rain delay along Lake Erie, extending their early lead to defeat the Guardians 6-1 on Tuesday night.

The Royals staked an early lead with a two-run home run in the second by Paul DeJong, but were dealt a blow in the home half of the inning when starter Michael Lorenzen had to leave the game with a suspected hamstring strain. Lorenzen is back in KC for an MRI this Wednesday. It fell to the bullpen to hold off a Cleveland squad needing to get back in the win column, and the Guardians would get on the board in the fourth with a Lane Thomas single. But when the rain came in the middle of the fifth, it would only drench Cleveland’s chances of a comeback, as James McArthur emerged from the bullpen after the delay to pitch two scoreless innings, including four strikeouts to pick up the win. The Royals made use of McArthur’s performance by climing three runs in the seventh—off two singles and a wild pitch—and an insurance run in the ninth.

The Royals (75-58) are now tied with the Guardians atop the AL Central, 2.5 games ahead of Minnesota. The Royals go for the sweep and the outright AL Central lead Wednesday afternoon at 12:10, with pregame beginning at 11:30 on KMMO AM 1300.
