Nolan Arenado’s base hit up the middle with two outs scored Masyn Winn from second, giving the St Louis Cardinals a much-needed 4-3 victory over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night at Busch Stadium.

It was Arenado’s second hit of the game, after he got on base in the fourth and scored one of the three Cardinal runs that put St Louis ahead in the frame. The Padres had scored in the first with an RBI single from Manny Machado, who then stole second as starting pitcher Chris Pallante struck out Xander Bogaerts. The throw from catcher Pedro Pagés was too high, allowing Jake Cronenworth to swipe home. San Diego then tied the game in the eighth with a solo home run.

Pallante ended up with a no decision and one out shy of a quality start, going 5.2 innings and allowing two runs on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Closer Ryan Helsley earned the win after pitching a scoreless ninth including two punchouts.

The Cardinals are now 65-66, still seven games behind Atlanta for the third NL Wild Card and ten-and-a-half games behind Milwaukee in the Central. The Cardinals will look to split the series with the Padres on Thursday, with first pitch at 1:15 p.m.
