The Kansas City Royals were limited to just two hits as the Cleveland Guardians dealt them their sixth straight loss, a 4-2 defeat at Kauffman Stadium on Monday, Sept. 2.
Maikel Garcia had the first hit, bringing home Yuli Gurriel in the second inning to start the scoring. After that, Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams retired the next 16 batters he faced, keeping the Royals contained as two-run home runs by Lane Thomas and Josh Naylor put the Guardians up for good. The Royals would add a run in the eighth, but not before Gurriel was lifted after hobbling to second on his double. Pinch runner Freddy Fermin came home by way of a Kyle Isbel sacrifice fly.
Michael Wacha gave up the first two-run home run to take the loss, going five innings and allowing two hits and one walk while striking out three.
The Royals (75-64) are now one game behind Minnesota for the second wild card spot and 4.5 games behind Cleveland for the AL Central lead. Boston remains 4.5 games behind the Royals for the third and final wild card spot, with Detroit and Seattle close behind the Red Sox. The Royals look to snap their longest losing streak of the season Tuesday evening at 6:45, with pregame at 6 p.m. on KMMO-FM 102.9.
